About the Artwork

The loon was a favourite subject of Lund's, particularly floating playfully on its back. This work is no different, but his skill as a sculptor is evident here. The soapstone itself has a rich grey colour, with the subtle veining adding to the depth of the material. Of particular note is the patch of light grey, which he has very deliberately and skilfully used for the loon's beak. The piece also features a pair of (what I believe to be) resin eyes, alert and pasted to the sculpture. It creates a striking piece for anyone looking to add a unique bit of "Canadiana" to their decor.

About the Artist

Maurice Llewelyn Lund (1933-2024) only started dedicating his life to sculpture after he found success as an educator and as well, as a manager in the financial services industry. Previous to that carving was a hobby, one he picked up in his youth growing up in Manitoba. His stone carvings were known for their detail and playful nature, and were popular amongst collectors of indigenous art.
