About the Artwork
This bowl in unique in a few unexpected ways. Although the grainy clay used gives the piece a rustic feel, the quality of the carving, along with the precision of the painted glaze of the exterior, adds an elegant touch to the Haudenosaunee tradition that Smith's family was responsible for reviving. The interior is glazed in a glossy black, complementing the exterior. The unique shape adds to the modernity of the piece. The bottom is signed with Smith's initials (STS) and dated '98.
About the Artist
Steve Smith is the son of the founder of Kanyengeh Pottery, a collective of artisans known for reviving the pottery traditions of the Six Nations peoples in Southern Ontario. He started his own pottery studio called Talking Earth with his wife Leigh, which has taken the foundations laid by his mother and Kanyengeh Pottery, broadening the range of motifs and techniques used. His pieces are highly collectible and are held by institutions like the Canadian Museum of History and the National Museum of the American Indian.
