About the Artwork

This small bowl is an exquisite example of the works of the Kanyengeh Pottery studio. The geometric pattern is very evenly and cleanly carved into the remarkably thin walls of the bowl. The matte brown exterior is a rich contrast to the glossy dark blue glaze of the interior. While the piece is undated, the skill, precision, and condition of the work would suggest that it is a later work from Syl Smith.

About the Artist

Sylvia "Syl" Smith was an original member of an artisan's collective from the mid-20th century, known for reviving a style of pottery found among the Six Nations peoples along the Grand River in southern Ontario. Specifically, they used geometric designs and a brown wash in their works, based on the shards of ancient pottery found along the riverbank of their ancestral homeland. The group formed the Kanyengeh Pottery studio, which is no longer in operation, but the group's works popularized the artistry and heritage of the Mohawk and inspired the formation of other pottery studios that carry on these traditions today.
