About the Artwork

These two small artworks seem to be sketches cut out of the artist's sketchbook as the papers these works are on are rudimentary and each work has one paper edge that is uneven. With no provenance, only the signature seeming to match that of other works on the market by this artist, it is likely these were potentially studies "en plein air" as the detail on these suggest that she was not working from memory and the various Anne de Saegers found on Google generally worked in oil and in much larger formats. Regardless, these are clearly done by a very practiced hand, each featuring excellent detail, despite the artist working in only one colour. The scale and perspective are equally skilfully executed.

These are being sold together as a pair.

The red sketch is in conte of Île Saint-Louis, an island in the Seine River in Paris, and is dated "06" on the front right bottom corner and "2007" on the rear. This sketch is sealed in a cellophane sleeve, although the mat has yellowed from age.

The blue sketch is in watercolour and depicts antiquarian book sellers (bouquinistes) that often set up their stalls along the bridges around Paris. The famed Notre Dame cathedral can be seen in the distance. This sketch is not protected by a cellophane sleeve, and the paper is slightly warped from the use of watercolours on it.

About the Artist

The identity of the artist is a bit of a mystery as searches on Google turn up an Anne de Saeger, Anne-Marie de Saeger, and even that these were pseudonyms for Marguerite Rousseau, variously listed as Belgian or Argentine, living and working extensively in France.
