About the Artwork
Like many of Norwell's other works, this painting features a vast landscape with diminutive architectural structures partially obscured by trees. This scaling of elements in the painting emphasizes Canada's massive and rich natural environment, which overwhelms what humans could erect in its midst. The idyllic scene is further enhanced by the choice of a pastel palette that creates a dream-like feeling for the viewer. This artwork was acquired from an art collector who was downsizing their collection, and this was itself acquired by the collector from reputable auction house, Waddington's.
About the Artist
Graham Noble Norwell (1901-1967) is a Scottish born Canadian, best known for his wintery and expansive depictions of rural mountainous Canadian landscapes. He studied art at the Ontario College of Art in Toronto and under the tutelage of highly respected artists like Arthur Lismer, George A. Reid, and Augustus Edwin John, and his works are in the collections of notable institutions like the Art Gallery of Ontario and the National Gallery of Canada.
