About the Artwork

This artwork from Sin seems typical of his style where he places the horizon line at the middle and uses simple forms and along with layering and colour, creates an immense amount of depth with a broad foreground, despite the relatively modest size of the paper itself. This has the effect of a landscape that makes you feel like you're daydreaming into the distance. Adding to this sense of a hazy dream-like state are the calming colours and serene waters in the harbour, and if you had the wherewithal to think about it, you might be forced to wonder how the sailboat in the foreground is moving at all. But nevermind that, as you're taken in again by the depth of the painting, with the masts of boats in a marina poking up at a distance.

About the Artist

Not much is known about Henry Sin, though his other works would suggest he practiced his art in the mid 1900s, taking inspiration from minimalist art movements where stencil-like forms are used to suggest imagery without a lot of detail.
