About the Artwork
This is a smaller example of Glew's works, which are often large format works that fill entire gallery walls. Despite that, the essence of the artist's work comes through as the various textures and shades of black and white dance against the canvas. As you inspect the intersection point of the black painted canvas against the rough broken fibres of torn white paper, you start to understand Glew's fascination with these contrasts. Glops of paint and layered papers give the piece additional dimension and dynamism. Turn the work over and you even see staples poking a bit hazardously out of the back of the canvas, giving you insight into the artist's methods and tools. This artwork was acquired from an art collector who was downsizing their collection, and themselves got it from reputable auction house, Waddington's.
About the Artist
Margaret Glew is a Toronto-based artist whose work weaves together texture, colour, and form to create art that seemingly jumps off the canvas. Her works have been exhibited extensively, solo and in groups, throughout Canada and the US, and are held in several private and public collections. Originally born in the UK, Glew grew up in the Canadian Maritimes, crediting her love of nature from childhood as a major influence on her art where she experiments with the intersection of the organic with the man-made.
